Our project

From 2 to 12 July 2019, a team of 5 other students from Psychology Studies and I ran an anger management workshop lasting 3 sessions for 6 Primary 1 to 2 children from low socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds at Care Corner Student Care Centre, located in Admiralty. Prior to this, we had conducted an observation session of the children at the centre to assess their needs, where we concluded that they would benefit from anger management skills. Afterwards, we created a proposal for our workshop and submitted it to our diploma lecturers, which was approved. In this proposal, we outlined our activities and strategies to decrease anger outbursts in the children and explained the theories behind them. We also came up with ways to work with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) behaviours if any of our children happened to be have ASD.

The respective goals of each session were:
Session 1: To educate on the importance of managing one’s anger
Session 2: To impart various ways of coping with anger and to refrain from acting on impulse
Session 3: To equip the children with social problem-solving skills to diffuse conflict effectively

 

Throughout our sessions, we also incentivized the children’s cooperation in our activities through the use of a token economy, where we had a board that rewarded each child’s participation with a sticker. In the last session, we then allowed them to exchange their stickers for various prizes and toys.

In total, the project was run on a budget of $700, sponsored by the Northwest Community Development Centre.
